I was recently looking back at the feedback from my blog as I was kind of looking for a reason as to why to carry on with it, if I’m honest. Maybe I’ll speak more on that in a seperate post but I saw a lot of you actually liked the “My Listening Ear” posts, a section on the blog I actually didn’t think would take off but happy it has. It was actually a friend who suggested doing this many years ago, so I have him to thank. As I’ve said before, music plays a big part in my life, and there’s something for every mood possible, which is why I’ve made the decision to bring the posts back for this year. I’m currently thinking of doing one a month, but if I can do more some months, then I will. I’ve tried not to let the last couple of days influence the music I share in this post, as when I’m not feeling my best, I don’t tend to listen to the most upbeat. I’ve tried to include a real mixture, and hopefully, you’ll discover a song that you enjoy in this post, or perhaps rediscover one that you used to love.
There were so many Tate McRae songs I could have picked from to include, but I decided to go with the one that probably gets stuck in my head the most. (with an interpretation of what I think she’s singing!) Despite it being super catchy, I really like how playful and fun the lyrics are, not to mention the beat behind the vocals is great and it’s just one of those songs that makes you feel happy and gets you up dancing.
Ren X Chinchilla – Chalk Outlines
A new artist I’ve discovered this month is Chinchilla. She has an incredible voice that is powerful and can use it in so many different ways whether its singing softly or with a bit more oomph, she just sounds amazing and this song with her and Ren, (who equally has a brilliant voice) showcases just how much Chinchilla can do with it and her different vocal ranges and control behind it. It’s one of the reasons I picked this song in particular. Both of their voices compliment one another, and when paired, the harmony’s are faultless. The lyrics are deep but relatable and clever as for me, it sums up depression very well. If you fancy checking out one of Chinchilla’s other songs, I would recommend “Little Girl Gone” and tell me what you think. It’s completed differently from this song she’s featured in. I love it but it really is like marmite so I’m keen to know what others think.
Austin Giorgio – Dangerous Hands
This was a song I stumbled on by complete accident. My Spotify was just playing similar songs to what I was listening to and I must admit I don’t usually have the patience to sit through them all but this one caught my eye, or shall I say ear.. eurgh terrible joke. I’ve never heard of Austin before. However, there is something quite soothing about his voice, which makes his music pleasant to listen to. This particular song you could kind of imagine as part of a soundtrack to a romance film. He sings with a lot of passion, which separates him from a lot of other artists.
This really is one of the most beautiful songs I’ve heard. I love the different tones to Jades voice, and the fact that you can hear the emotion makes it more personal and like she’s pouring her soul out. Even though it’s a slower paced song, it’s not sad at all. If you listen to the lyrics, you’d soon find out what’s being said is quite sweet. It would be the perfect wedding song, actually! I don’t feel like Jade gets the exposure she should have as she has some great songs but unless you randomly discovered her or watched “My Life With The Walter Boys” then you’re probably not going to know who she is. I really recommend listening to her stripped back versions. They’re even better! She is very similar to Sia, so if you like her style, then you should like Jade.
I definitely agree with everyone else who has said this gives them early 2010’s vibes. It’s another really catchy song that I will warn you. All you need is to hear it once for it to be stuck in your head all day. It’s a lot of fun though!
There’s just something really cool about Benson Boone, isn’t there? He really is the whole package. His voice is incredible, I love the roughness to it, and there’s not one bad song I’ve heard of his. The different dynamics within his songs forever keep you interested as you never know where they are going to take you. Unless you’re like me, of course, who constantly listens to them all on repeat, they’re no longer a surprise, haha. “Beautiful Things” is obviously a lot of peoples favourites and rightly so, I absolutely love that song, but he has so many others that are amazing. I just love how he tells a story throughout all of his songs.
Muse – Supermassive Black Hole
The fact that this song is 18 years old makes me feel incredibly old, ancient even. I really loved Muse, I still do, but this will always be one of my favourites of theirs and a song that is never skipped in my car. Butterflies and Hurricanes is also another favourite of mine, but their song titles are so quirky, aren’t they? I also feel like this song just doesn’t age 18 years later, and I still love it as much as when it first came out!
If there are any songs you recommend and feel like should be included in Februarys edition of “My Listening Ear” feel free to comment below and I will give them a listen.
Amy x
