I couldn’t have chosen for February more of a mixed group of songs if I tried. I think it’s fair to say with the exception of the odd few, I don’t really listen to much new music anymore but if you like discovering new artists or songs that you had forgotten about then the “My Listening Ear” posts are for you. I usually say that my recommendations usually represent my month, but I must admit February was a high for quite a while, and it’s kind of ended on a low. You don’t just think about how you felt at the beginning of the month though do you, you just think about how you’re feeling now. That’s why I didn’t want to just include sad songs, and instead, I had a thought about what songs uplift me and could also represent my first half of February. I am positive that at least one of these tracks will resonate with you. So grab your headphones or air pods, and let’s get stuck into it. Don’t forget you can listen by clicking the title and name of each song!
I know I mentioned a Tate McRae song in my last listening ear, but when she’s just dropped her So Close To What album, it’s hard not to include a song for February’s as well. I love “Sports Car”, but this one is my favourite out of all. The lyrics are kind of sad, but I find relatable, and the chorus is particularly catchy. The song is addictive and one of those I’m trying not to overplay too much!
This is a song that I seem to constantly revisit throughout my life. It is a song that has the power to make me happy but also emotional. One that stops you in your tracks. One that speaks so much. It has the power to make you really feel all your unsaid emotions, and that’s why I love this song so much. You know it’s an amazing song when 14 years later it’s still like you’ve heard it for the first time, and it just doesn’t seem to age. The lyrics repeatedly state “no time,” which is reflective on the fast-paced world we live in. It sets your mind into personally thinking of what it means to truly live when time is always passing. It also allows us to think about the time that has already passed us such as, happy and sad memories, growing up, saying goodbyes, friendships, moving on and that never changes each time you listen to the song.
As a massive overthinker myself, the lyrics are quite relatable with me, and I think that’s what draws my attention to songs, actually, a catchy beat or relatable lyrics. These lyrics, in particular, I feel probably describe 90% of me, especially when all you see is your own flaws. I’ve always admired Camila Cabello’s voice. She always sounds so raw and sings with such passion, not to mention a lot of her songs are really catchy. Although some of the lyrics are sad, it’s mainly a positive message of acceptance and quite a sweet song when you deconstruct it.
MGMT – Electric Feel (Justice Remix)
The original version is good, but nothing beats the Justice remix. It’s probably one of the best remixes there is. The drop is great, the bass is great, what’s not to love? I feel like this is one of those tunes (I don’t feel cool enough to say tune!) that just instantly puts you in a good mood and also one that just doesn’t age through time. I listen to my music fairly loud anyways but this is one that I feel like you do have to listen to loudly. The kind of song that you listen to in your car on a road trip somewhere, windows down, wind blowing in your hair if you have any, are you getting me? I don’t know, maybe I’m just a little weirdo, haha. If you could see me dancing in my chair right now, you would definitely think so!
Maroon 5 – What Lovers Do ft. SZA
This is another song that has the ability to just instantly make you happy. Everything about this song is catchy, from the repetitive lyrics to the catchy beat. I’m so glad I’ve found out Adam is singing “been wishing for you” because I thought it was something else! I have a talent, though, for when I don’t know the lyrics to a song, I tend to just make up my own and it’s way off the real lyrics!
India has quite a unique voice and one that is very underrated. Even though from her YouTube channel it doesn’t look like she sings anymore, it’s still worth checking out her other songs. This is my favourite of hers for the reasons being the background track is really catchy, chilled and upbeat, even if the lyrics aren’t as upbeat, they are still catchy and the different tones to her voice are showcased throughout the song. It’s another one that will be stuck in your head all day after listening to it. It really is a shame that her music didn’t do better as there is no doubt that she is very talented and should have been more noticed.
Drama//City – I Feel Dangerous
This song is so good. I love the different dynamics to it, like the change in tempo. This is going to sound so strange, but do you ever have those songs that just make you feel bad? The only way to explain it is, after listening, you feel like yep I can get stuff done, I’m going to take control again haha. I’ll see myself out.
As always, if you have any recommendations that you think should be included in the next one, let me know in the comments section and I’ll give them a listen!
Amy x
