From Yarn to Table: Crafting Latch Hook Coasters

I have been a creative person ever since I can remember. From a young age, my nanny introduced me to her card making box. When I saw all the little intricate bits, I knew I wanted my own. So that’s what I did. I started making cards for my friends and family and I then joined the craft club at school where we made cards and sold them and the money we got we used for further supplies. I then got a creative job specializing in embroidery work but I have since left that job of 9 years. I didn’t realize how much I would miss that side of things when I left. Ever since, I have been searching for ways to stay creative. That’s when I found this coaster making kit on Amazon. I wanted to find something I could either gift or use myself. It had to be something that wouldn’t just get thrown into a cupboard. Coasters are something that gets used everyday. They are essential for most tables. So, I knew that this kit wasn’t going to be a waste of money or time. Not that this was a lot of money anyways, I think it was very reasonable but you don’t just want to buy tat do you, if you know what I mean.

There were a few different designs to choose from. I like how colourful the rainbows are. I thought I could use these for my office just to give a little pop of colour. Inside the kit you get everything you need to make two coasters. There’s an instruction booklet perfect for a beginner like me. I like that the design is already on the mesh. You don’t have to guess where to place each colour. This way, you won’t realize later that you’ve made a mistake. You also get the latch hook tool and threads. This means there aren’t any extra expenses because you don’t need to buy anything else. The kit makes a really lovely gift. It’s perfect for all occasions and DIY lovers. It’s even suitable for children to have a go at. For £13, I think this is very reasonable considering the materials included. You also get enjoyment from making the coasters. It’s a cute keepsake to put your drinks on every day. It’s not that difficult to get the hang of and its a change from your normal sewing kits.

They are quite big to be coasters. Still, I reckon you could probably cut them down to scale. They’d turn out ok if that’s what you want to use them for. You could also just hang them somewhere or even frame them. I did notice one thing. Although the design is very handy since it’s already printed on the mesh, the colours do not completely match up. In fact, I noticed a shade of yarn was missing from the kit. You can use some of the other colours instead. Just make it up as you go along. There was an instruction sheet provided. However, there was also a QR code to scan and watch a video to see how it’s done. I did end up watching a video on YouTube because the kit’s own video was too quick to follow. I needed it to be shown slower. I would say they were the only negatives worth mentioning. As always, I’m going to be honest. Overall, it’s a good little kit that keeps you entertained for a few hours.

So what is latch hook? I discovered what latch hook is not so long ago. It is a craft that uses a hooked tool to pull yarn or thread through a canvas or mesh backing. This creates a looped pile effect. It’s commonly used to make rugs, wall hangings and other decorative items. The process involves using a latch hook tool. You pull strands of yarn through the canvas, securing them in place as you work. It’s a fun creative way to produce textured designs and patterns. It sounds a bit complicated. If you’re unsure before you want to buy a kit, there are plenty of videos on YouTube. I’m sure TikTok will have some as well, demonstrating how to do the process. Like most things, it just requires repetition. Once you’ve got the hang of it, you will want to do more! There are also plenty of rug making kits on Amazon. If you want to move onto something bigger and better, you can find them there. I’m sure there are other websites out there where they sell different kits too!

As you can see I feel they turned out pretty well. I personally like the second one better with the orange. That’s the one I went with because I didn’t have enough colours to do the design how it was printed. I think I might actually just hang these up in my office somewhere. I wouldn’t want to ruin them by putting drinks on them all the time. I definitely have the bug for it now. I am tempted to order my own mesh and yarn. I want to see what I can create because I think that would be fun. Overall, I enjoyed learning how to latch hook. This technique is perfect if you have any leftover bits of wool. It means nothing is going to waste, and you get to create something exciting. You also can’t beat something homemade. It’s nice to buy things, don’t get me wrong, however, when you put the time and effort into something, it turns out well. You get a sense of achievement. Whether you’re a seasoned crafter or a beginner, latch hooking is easy to learn and offers endless possibilities for customization.

Have you tried latch hook before?
