I know many of you will be happy to know that “My Listening Ear” is back! I was thinking the other day, considering how much music I listen too, I’ve barely seen anyone live! I think that’s perhaps something I may look at in the future but I do tend to watch more comedians and theatre shows than anything, and again that is something I love. To be honest there aren’t a lot of people I know who are into the same music as I am, and I don’t have the guts to go to somewhere like that on my own haha, so I shall continue to watch performances on YouTube. Anyways, this months recommendations are a bit of a mixture compared to last months more chilled vibes. I thought I’d mix things up again and include a variety. One or two you may recognise from hearing recently on tv depending on what you watch, but there is also some other tracks that I think you’ll love and want to give a listen. In the next few months, “My Listening Ear” is going to have a slight structural change, as I think I could do this in a better way however, don’t worry it’s not going anywhere. I enjoy this section of the blog just as much as everyone else seems to, so it’s here to stay!
The National – Once Upon A Poolside
I am so thankful to the season finale of You for bringing this song into my life. As soon as I heard this song, I instantly fell in love with it and got goosebumps. It also brought such emotion on that at what point I felt like I wanted to burst into tears. It is truly one of the most beautiful songs I have ever heard in my life and yet the lyrics carry such sadness but are also relatable. Every time I’ve played this song, I feel exactly the same as when I first heard it. The emotion you can feel behind both singers voices just sinks into your soul so deep. Apparently there are some amazing collaborations on this album too so I definitely need to give this album a listen but this song is enough on it’s own to check the album out, honestly out of all the songs on this post, this is the one you should check out the most.
Hidden Citizens – Take Over (feat. Ruelle)
I’m sorry, I have included another song with Ruelle but she only features on this one, she just has such a good voice and I can’t name a bad song she’s done or been featured on. The beat is super catchy on this track and went straight on to my playlist. It gives off like I can take on the world vibes and would work as a backing song in a series or film. It’s a strong collaboration.
“The Election of 1800” from HAMILTON
I don’t think I’ve ever included a song from a musical on any of “My Listening Ear” posts so this is a first for me but I love musicals and most shows at the theatre to be honest. I haven’t seen Hamilton but I have seen clips of the production and obviously listened to the songs and this is one that gets stuck in my head. The melody is so catchy and I love the differences in beat throughout. I think the characters shine through this particular track and the energy is so good. I really hope I get the chance to see this one day as I hear so many good things.
Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers – American Girl
I am so happy I rediscovered this song!! I had completely forgotten about this one but what a tune! I love it, it’s so fun and super catchy and just a feel good, what I call a “happy” song. Give it a listen because you probably won’t know it from the title but I guarantee you will once you’ve clicked on the link!
I think this song is currently on advert but that’s not where I heard, I’m sure it’s been featured on a few new series at the moment and I love it so much. It’s such a feel good song which is why it’s no surprise that it’s had millions and millions of views on YouTube. I really love the vibe of this band and I think it’s because it takes me back to the early 2010’s with the likes of Kodaline who I absolutely love and so it’s nice to have music in this day that fits the vibe of back then, as things have since evolved and I don’t follow new music as much as I used to. I cannot wait to hear more from this band and I think if they ever came over to the UK, they would be a good one to go and see somewhere live.
I am not massively into pop music but I must admit, out of all the members of Little Mix, Jade is the one I am enjoying the most as a solo artist. I love how quirky she is and I always appreciate her creativeness. She isn’t afraid to be herself and I feel she’s a great role model. This has to be one of my favourite songs of hers that she has released to date. Whenever it comes on it always automatically puts me in a good mood and I can’t help but dance to it, usually in the kitchen! Even though the beat is fast paced, it does have these really calming vibes to it. I honestly think she would be a good person to see on tour. She would definitely put on a good show and as someone who has seen Little Mix live, I can honestly say she sounds amazing live.
It was my sister that actually introduced me to Dominic Fike, as I had never heard of him. I should probably give some of his other songs a listen, but this one is really catchy and I love the different changes in tempo.
Lana Del Rey – Chemtrails Over The Country Club
It’s no secret how much I love Lana Del Rey and have included many songs of hers on my blog in the past, and well today is no exception. If my life was a movie, her music would be the soundtrack for sure. Her voice is so soothing, calming and angelic, and she just creates beautiful pieces of music. Not to mention how incredibly talented she is at writing her songs and also most of her melodies. Her lyrics are so powerful at times and it just separates her from the rest of the field by far. There will never be another artist like her, she’s just amazing.
