So I thought I’d share 5 things you might not know about me. I have done this a few times before, but I thought rather than the generic “I’m originally from London, I danced in one of the Olympic torch opening ceremonies” type of things, I would try and make this one a little more personal. I am not great at talking about myself as a person, as I feel I am incredible boring. So, seeing as we are feeling brave at the moment, let’s get out of the comfort zone a little further and actually talk about me. I have been blogging on and off for, I think, 12 years now, and at the beginning I use to be quite public about everything. Then people and experiences made me go into a bit of a shell, and I became much more private about certain parts of my life. Not just on my blog, but in all aspects of my life. As there are many new people here, I thought it would be quite nice for you to properly get to know me a bit more as the person behind the blog. There will be some interesting things and some not so interesting things, but hopefully you’ll learn something new about me along the way. So, let’s see how it goes…
1. I have lots of little rituals
I’ll tell you a bit about me as a person. I have a lot of habits and rituals that sometimes make me wonder if I have OCD. I like things done a certain way, which is one of the reasons I am not very good at accepting help. I also have patterns for doing things, so if I feel like I have skipped a step, the whole process has to start all over again. It’s definitely a control thing, and it is something I am trying to let go of. I have rituals for locking my car, but it’s a shame I don’t have this for locking my house, as I have a big habit of leaving my door unlocked. I also carry antibacterial gel with me for places that make me feel uneasy about being clean. I hide this from people because I know that I probably look odd, so I will do this, for example, when I walk to the office and then again when I get in the car to go home. My mum and my sister are always reminding me of the time we were meant to go and look around the shops. We decided to get a drink first, and somebody must have shaken mine up because when I opened it, the smallest bit went on my top. It stressed me out so much we had to go home. I can laugh about it now haha. I understand this might make me sound like hard work, but I’m working on things and trying to ease of some of the weird and wonderful habits I seem to have gained along the way. I suppose we all have out little quirks, and these are definitely some of mine.
2. I’m slightly obsessed with anything crime related
I probably have a slight obsession with anything crime related on TV. It’s less of a hobby and more of a personality trait. 24 Hours in Police Custody is probably my favourite TV show, and I have absolutely no problem watching something murder-related before bed. Don’t get me wrong, it’s obviously unfortunate for the people involved, but I find it fascinating trying to understand what goes on in people’s minds and how certain situations happen. This post is making me sound more unhinged by the second. I definitely shouldn’t admit to this, but as a child I also had a weird obsession with graveyards. Most children are playing at the park, and I’m dragging my family around reading tombstones. I have absolutely no idea where that fascination came from, but I remember finding one where a whole family from around the 18th century had died. I couldn’t let it go, so naturally I went home and started searching on Google to see if I could find out what happened. That was just yesterday, I’m kidding, but turns out they had all drowned. Quite unfortunate. I still love watching murder documentaries and TV shows based on true stories. I think it’s the mystery of it all that gets me. Trying to piece together what happened, why it happened and what was going on behind the scenes. So yes, if you ever need someone to watch something slightly disturbing with you, I’m probably your person.
3. I have some very unusual fears
Well, they’re very normal to me, but they don’t seem particularly normal to other people. Firstly, I have a fear of bridges. I don’t trust them. I don’t know if it’s because of watching Final Destination (you know the one I’m talking about!) or what, but I absolutely hate them. I had to go across one in Edinburgh once and I think I was writing my will in my head the entire time. Awful experience. 10/10 would not recommend. Another fear I have is car boots falling down on my head. It’s okay, you can laugh. Again, I don’t trust them to stay up. A few months ago, I had to take my seats down and that was an experience! My arms aren’t long enough, so do you know how difficult it is trying to avoid putting your head under the boot while you’re doing it? If I’m with anyone and they’re putting bags into their boot, you can bet I’m keeping an eye on it just in case something happens. Lastly, I have a fear of birds. Specifically owls. They are intimidating. I went to a zoo once and there was an owl there. I have never witnessed such a look of disgust in my life. It genuinely looked like it was judging me. Needless to say, it was a very brief visit.
4. My comfort things
Firstly, music. Music is comforting no matter what mood I’m in. Sad? Music. Happy? Music. Bad day? Music. Feeling goofy? Dancing around the kitchen to music. Music is so powerful, and I feel like sometimes it can speak for how you’re feeling when you don’t quite know how to put it into words yourself. Secondly, give me a Shrek film any day. These are the ultimate comfort films. I’m in hysterics every single time I watch them, despite having seen them countless times. I also quote the films daily in real life, which is absolutely wasted on people BECAUSE THEY DON’T UNDERSTAND!! Thirdly, the beach. It’s definitely one of my happy places, and I could quite happily sit on the beach and watch the world go by. Obviously, I’m not going in the sea. I’m not risking my life, but I find the sea so calming, in the same way I find listening to the rain calming. Fourth is cookie dough. I love cookie dough. It’s literally an unhealthy obsession. Pizza Hut does the best one, although I’ve not had it in soooo long. I really need to try making my own version again. Lastly, a blanket. As I mentioned in yesterday’s post, I love a blanket. I actually have a comfort blanket that is my go-to after a bad day. It probably sounds slightly childish, but honestly, I don’t care. Sometimes you just need a blanket and that’s that.
5. I have some strange habits
A really bad habit of mine is charging my phone. And when I say “charging my phone”, I mean barely charging it at all. I don’t usually charge my phone every day. It gets charged as and when I remember, and most of the time it doesn’t even get fully charged, just enough to make sure I have some battery. More recently, I’ve been having to do this even more often, so I guess it would probably make sense to just charge it every night. I have absolutely no excuse either. I have a charger upstairs and a charger downstairs. I’m just not this social butterfly who needs to be available 24/7. Which is also probably why my phone is permanently on silent. Although, I have recently changed it to vibrate, so I guess that’s something, right? I don’t think I could ever have it on loud. That’s beyond me. Another habit of mine is calling people “my friend.” They aren’t actually my friend. I use it when someone has annoyed me, particularly when I know it will annoy them. It’s also commonly used while I’m driving, usually accompanied by the occasional bit of road rage. So, if you’ve ever been called “my friend” by me, there’s a good chance you weren’t actually my friend at that particular moment.
So there we have it, five things you might not have known about me! I actually really enjoyed writing this because it’s made me realise just how many little things make up who I am, from my slightly questionable fear of car boots to my love of Shrek, cookie dough and a good comfort blanket. I hope you’ve enjoyed getting to know me a little better. Now it’s your turn, tell me one thing about you that I probably wouldn’t know! I’d love to get to know the people behind the screens a little better too.
